iShares Cup 2009

Welcome to the iShares Cup 2009!

Six fantastic venues will welcome the iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series this season. We take a look at the stunning locations that will set the scene for 2009.

The iShares Cup 2009 visits six European venues, a mix of buzzing cosmopolitan cities and spectacular seaside resorts, each carefully chosen to provide not only the hottest racing but also the best vantage points for spectators to get up close to all the action.

Each regatta takes place over three days, with as many as 18 fast and furious races, each lasting around 20 minutes. Each day is a mix of corporate sailing races, giving VIP guests and media a chance to get out on the water and experience the Extreme 40 and then the real action of the iShares Cup racing itself — although there will still be ‘fifth man’ guests on board, expect the sailors to take no prisoners in the fiercely competitive races. Things will step up yet another gear for the final race of each event, which counts for double points! Last season every regatta went to the wire including the Overall iShares Cup 2008 winner.

Venice: The 2009 iShares Cup kicks off in a brand new venue, the historic city of Venice, Italy. The Extreme 40s will be racing the narrow canals, dodging the gondoliers as they pass some of Europe's most famous sights.

Hyères-TPM: The iShares Cup returns to the Southern France venue of Hyères, Toulon Provence Méditerranée for Round 2 of the circuit. A mecca for competitive sailing, Hyères-TPM is renowned for spectacular weather conditions.

Cowes: The Isle of Wight welcomes the iShares Cup back for Round 3 in 2009, racing as part of the world-famous Cowes Week regatta. This year the iShares Cup has a new home off Cowes Green/Egypt Point, making for a fantastic spectacle.

Kiel: The fourth leg of the iShares Cup returns to Kiel, Germany. Expect this sailing-mad city on the Baltic Sea to turn out in crowds of thousands once again to see the Extreme 40s racing just feet from the shore.

Amsterdam: A favourite iShares Cup venue since the circuit originated, Amsterdam sees sailing right in the heart of the city. The Extreme 40s will be packed onto ultra-narrow racecourses in the centre of this cosmopolitan capital.

Almeria: The iShares Cup has a new venue for the last event of the 2009 circuit, at the Spanish port of Almeria. The Mediterranean venue should provide fantastic sailing conditions for the October grand finale.
